Cumberland Lodge 2018
Like previous years, the Maxwell Society and others enjoyed a weekend away to the luxurious Cumberland lodge. A complete bargain for what was provided to us on our short getaway. A weekend filled with walks in the park and gravitational waves was just what we needed post-January exams.
It started as a coach drive to Windsor which got the experience going. Upon arrival, we signed in and dropped off the luggage in our rooms. My first trip to Cumberland lodge include one of the nicest rooms with a vintage style bathtub. They are shared rooms, but you can be with someone you know if you choose to. Shortly after settling in we had our first lecture followed by dinner and an infamous Maxwell quiz.
Saturday Morning started with a delicious breakfast and another lecture followed by a long walk in the park. At the lodge you can ride bicycles, provided by the Lodge for free and visit the numerous lakes in the area. There is also a lot of sitting space surrounding and inside the lodge along with a game room in the basement with snooker and table tennis. Over the course of the weekend there was a lot of free time to relax or read up on the lectures that were taught.
On Saturday night we took part in a murder mystery which the societies’ committee played part in. It was a good way to mingle with students in other years and it was also not compulsory so the people who chose not to take part still enjoyed watching everyone struggle to unriddle the mystery.
To much of our advantage, we were able to attend Sunday mass… with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We were lucky enough to see her after the service and keep our invitations. With our last lunch finished, we had a short time to enjoy the sun outside before heading on the coach back to London.
I took a lot from the weekend, such a new friends, a deeper knowledge of gravitational waves and most of all a longing for next years return to Cumberland Lodge.
